SERVA
Smart Eco-Frendily Food Packaging
Year: 2021
Group Project
QUT University
The SERVA containers are reusable and recyclable packaging for refrigerated products using a eco-friendly material. Tracking chips and quality measuring sensors are used in connection with smart shelving that shows and manages incoming expiry or contamination.
System Thinking Approach
Our Design Process began in an ID Studio class in March, 2021, as a team we explored a system orientated approach to food waste and management within our homes and grocery stores. Initially we did some detailed mapping using MIM, PACT and journey approaches drawing out leverage points. We also had access to a grocery store exploring behind the scenes to access further parts of our system.
Research To Concept.
This project showed how we could place a product intervention after heavy research and investigation into a current system.
Different Alterations.
Due to storing many different types of food products means we to have some modifications for the products which could store food and liquids.
Shelfing Units
Specially designed shelfing units will be implemented for the SERVA containers, consisting of easy organisation and management of food. The shelfing units will come in a variety of sizes to suit each type of container and due to the containers being specifically sized, the shelfing will actually create more space in the fridge to hold items.
The Assembly
The sustainable packing is primarily made from a wheat straw material which is BPA free and FDA approved. It is made from a by product of wheat production left overs after wheat harvest. The assembly consists of a clear PP lid with a air tight lid design which will work with a press down and twist process.
